Bagian ini menyajikan definisi konsep kunci yang mendasari gagasan yang pembangunan berkelanjutan. Pembangunan berkelanjutan, seperti yang didefinisikan oleh Uni Eropa, singkatan memenuhi kebutuhan pembangunan generasi sekarang tanpa membahayakan kemampuan generasi mendatang untuk memenuhi mereka pengembangan sendiri kebutuhan. Pembangunan berkelanjutan tidak hanya berfokus pada lingkungan masalah, tapi secara luas menangkap berbagai dimensi pembangunan. Secara tradisional, pembangunan berkelanjutan secara konseptual dianggap dalam tiga pilar utama: Kelestarian lingkungan, Keberlanjutan ekonomi; dan Keberlanjutan sosial.
